What is IEC (Import Export Code)?
The Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is a 10-digit unique identification number assigned by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India.. It acts as a crucial business identification number and is mandatory for any export from India or import into India, unless specifically exempted.
No individual or business is allowed to carry out import or export activities without an IEC, except:
-
- Service exporters who are not availing benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy.
- Individuals importing or exporting goods for personal use, not related to trade, manufacture, or agriculture.
Since the rollout of the GST regime in India, the IEC is now aligned with the Permanent Account Number (PAN) of the applicant. However, despite this integration, a separate IEC is still issued and made available by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) upon successful submission of the application.

IEC registration offers several strategic advantages for businesses involved in international trade. Whether you’re an established exporter or just starting your import-export journey, obtaining an IEC unlocks multiple benefits that support smooth and compliant global operations.
- Permanent Validity – No Renewal Required
After the IEC is granted by the DGFT, it remains valid for the lifetime of the entity. There is no need for renewal or any recurring compliance, making it a one-time registration process for importers and exporters. This ensures businesses can focus more on growing their global presence without worrying about recurring formalities or additional regulatory costs.-
- One-time registration.
- Valid for life, unless voluntarily surrendered or cancelled.
- No annual renewal fees.
-
- Eligibility for Government Schemes & Incentives
Registered IEC holders can avail various subsidies, exemptions, and benefits under India’s Foreign Trade Policy (FTP). These include:-
- Duty drawback schemes
- Export promotion capital goods (EPCG) scheme
- Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS)
- Service Exports from India Scheme (SEIS)
These schemes are designed to promote exports by reducing operational costs and enhancing international competitiveness.
-
- Minimal Compliance Requirements
One of the biggest advantages of IEC registration is that it comes with no post-registration compliance requirements. Unlike other business registrations, there’s:-
- No need to file monthly/annual returns
- No compliance audits or filings with DGFT
- No renewal or revalidation process
This makes IEC extremely simple to maintain, especially for small businesses and individual exporters.
-
- Quick Online Application & Easy Processing
The DGFT has simplified the IEC registration process through a fully digital platform. Applicants can register using their PAN and Aadhaar, fill out the online form upload necessary documents, and receive the IEC within 1–2 business days in most cases.
The Import Export Code (IEC) is granted with permanent validity and does not require renewal. However, in accordance with the latest DGFT guidelines, it is compulsory to update IEC details once every year to ensure the code remains active.
Failure to update the IEC annually may lead to its deactivation by the DGFT, which could delay or disrupt import and export activities.
To maintain its active status, IEC holders must complete the update between April and June each year. The best part? There is no government fee for updating the IEC within this window.
- One IEC for One PAN: An individual or business entity can obtain only one Import Export Code (IEC) against a single Permanent Account Number (PAN). Multiple IECs are not permitted for the same PAN.
- Amendment is possible: You can modify details if needed via the DGFT portal.
- No need to file returns: IEC holders don’t need to submit any monthly or annual returns.
